Joseph Bird Casteel was born in Marshfield, MO on October 16, 1898. He went into business as a water well driller in Oklahoma. They had about 12 rigs, until the Great Depression. They had to sell off the rigs one by one, until 1934 when they went bankrupt, He lost everything in the Great Depression. He was father to 9 children, 2 who died as children. They lived in a two room shack with a tent attached to the back. The walls were bare studs which were lined with old newspapers to keep warm in winter. Eventually he moved the family to San Diego California. He is buried there beside his wife and grandson.
