Phyllis E. Eley, 93, of Union City, IN, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, March 1, 2017. She was born in Hillgrove, OH, on Oct. 16, 1923 to the late Ray and Alice (Arnold) Wagner.

Phyllis attended the one-room school house in Hillgrove, Ohio for her first eight grades of school. She was a graduate of Jackson High School, Union City, OH, and a 1944 graduate of Miami Valley School of Nursing in Dayton, OH. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Bethany Hospital in Chicago for two years and at Union City Memorial Hospital for 30 years, as well as did private duty nursing. She married Wilmer Eley on Oct. 10, 1948. She was a long-time member of the Church of the Brethren.

Phyllis enjoyed baking, sewing, tatting, needlework, gardening, china painting, exhibiting her handiwork at the Indiana State Fair, participating in the Union City Farmer's Market, and time with her family.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Bishop and Jean Hull; son, Theodore Eley; and daughter-in-law, Pam Eley.

Phyllis is survived by her husband of 68 years, Wilmer Eley; children, Scott (Bev) Eley, David Eley, Diane Eley, and Mark Eley; 15 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Glick; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Reichard Funeral Home, Inc., Union City, IN. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home and for one hour prior to services on Saturday. Burial will be in the Brick Memorial Park Cemetery, Union City, IN. Pastor Jim Leonard will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
