He was one of six children born to William Thomas and Nancy Nunn Brewer. On November 11, 1890, he married Signora "Doda" Cook in North Carolina. Together they had 12 children and nine that reached maturity and married. In 1891, his father gathered up most of the children and headed west. Doctor Brewer and his new wife Doda were among the Brewers that settled in the small town of Arkadelphia on the banks of the Ouachita River.
