R.D. Buie, 98, of Main Street NW, died May 29, 2002 at Gateway Nursing Center.
Born Nov. 22, 1903, in Davidson County, he was a son of the late Robert L and Emma Doby Buie.
Retired from Burlington Industries, he held positions in Bristol, Tenn., Mooresville, Newton and Fayetteville. A former memober of Campbell University board of trustees in Buie's Creek, he was involved in a number of activities with local churches and statewide committees. An organizational member and president of Council on Aging in Catawba County, he was active in the Lions and Kiwanis Clubs. He received the Governors Award for Volunteers in 1996.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 63 years. Shirley Cox Buie, four brothers and a sister.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Martin Buie; a daughter, Rachel B. Cline of Asheville; a brother, S. Jefferson Buie of Conover; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. David Smith at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Lenoir. Burial will be private in Oakwood Cemetery in Hickory.
The family will be at the church one hour prior to the service.
