CPL Richard Allen Haithcox, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Statesville, NC.

Corporal Richard Allen Haithcox was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, CPL Haithcox served our country until May 17th, 1970 in Cambodia. He was 20 years old and was not married. Richard died from multiple fragmentation wounds from a mine. His body was recovered. CPL Haithcox is on panel 10W, line 057 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.

Richard Allen "Ricky" Haithcox was and is my brother and a hero. I couldn't ask for a better brother and the Army couldn't ask for a better soldier. We had good times together swimming, hunting, fishing, and endless games of "catch". He had lots of friends in school, more fun than studious. The Army thought he was great too, awarding him the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Army Achievement Medal and of course, the Purple Heart for his Combat Related Wounds in Action.

Quoting from his Silver Star award: "HAITHCOX, RICHARD A. 244840779 CPL (Then PFC) United States Army, Company D, 1st Battation (Airmobile) 12th Calvary. For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Cambodia. He distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 17 May 1970, in the Republic of Cambodia. Upon engaging an ememy force, the initial burst of hostile fire wounded the machinegunner and several other men in the platoon. Private First Class Haithcox immediately hit the ground and crawled forward under the blazing fire to the side of his injured machinegunner as he place suppressive fire onto the enemy position, his comrades were able to move the casualties. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upoon himself, his unit, and the United States Army."

Now there's a brother and hero to be proud to have known. I'd be proud to know any of his Army buddies who'd like to get in touch with me. God Bless America. Joseph(Jay)L. Haithcox, Jr, 334 Euclid Ave, Statesville, NC 28677, [email protected].
