Mary graduated from Deer River High School in 1941. She graduated from the College of St. Benedict in Minnesota in 1944 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. Most of Mary’s public life took place in South Bend. While there, Mary traveled to Western Michigan for four years to attend graduate school and received a Master of Arts degree in counseling and psychology.. She was a Marriage and Family Counselor as well as a private counselor. Mary worked at both Dismas House and the Y.W.C.A. Women’s shelter as a volunteer. Mary was very proud to have helped start the first Women's Shelter in South Bend.
Upon moving to Tempe in 1980 Mary volunteered with the mentally ill as a companion. In 2003 Mary and George returned to South Bend, IN Mary enjoyed playing the piano, reading, visiting with her children and grandchildren. She was an avid, intellectual reader, a proponent of social justice, an advocate of inclusion, and a supporter of the arts. She was a strong Catholic woman well ahead of her time. Her legacy lives on through her children and grandchildren, she will be missed.
A celebration of Mary’s life will take place on March 10th, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Chapel at Holy Cross College, Notre Dame, IN.. A visitation will start at 9:30 a.m. in the chapel. A luncheon will follow immediately after the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Y.W.C.A. Women’s Shelter of Michiana in South Bend, IN.
