Born in Harrison County's Posey Township to Amos and Charlotte (Shuck) Johnson, John appears with his parents and siblings in census records for 1850, and in 1860, just weeks before he was married.

The husband of Sarah Cromwell, they were married 05 Jul 1860, and afterwards resided in Harrison and later, Decatur counties in Indiana. They also appear on the 1900 census at St. Louis, enumerated with their youngest son, Harry G. Johnson.

His wife died at Corydon in 1909 and was interred there with her family members.

A cooper by trade, John remained in St. Louis and died there of heart disease at St. Louis Christian Hospital.

Per his death certificate and this cemetery's database, he was interred in this cemetery.

The informant on his death certificate was a grandson, Claude Johnson, who was not able to provide much useful genealogical information.
