Isaac was the fourth of eight children born to Luke and Elizabeth (McCraven) Hood. His siblings were:

Isaac was allegedly a heavy drinker and the cause of a lot of fires at his home.

He married Elizabeth Kirby on 8 Sept 1850 in Clark Co., IL. It is believed that they were the parents of nine children, but only the following five children are known for certain:

3. Luke B., b. 26 Jan 1855 in Douglas Co., IL; d. 6 Feb 1931 in Douglas Co., Il; m. Anliza E. James 13 Mar 1878 in Douglas Co., IL; parents of 7 children.

4. Susan Alice, b. 8 July 1859 in Edgar Co., IL; d. 4 Dec 1931 in Mattoon, Coles, IL; m. William F. Creviston in Dec of 1877 in Douglas Co. IL; parents of 13 children.
