Thomas BENSON CHENEY is the second son of John CHENEY and his first wife, Rachel BENSON. He was born in Maryland on the 25th of January 1788 and moved to Georgia with his father as a YOUNG teen-ager. The marriage of Thomas B. CHENEY and Lucy Middlebrook(s) on the 21 st of January 1807 is recorded in CLARK Co., GA. Lucy is the daughter of Isaac Middlebrook(s) and Elizabeth Perkins of Virginia and North Carolina. Thomas B. CHENEY and his family were in Oglethorpe Co., GA and then in 1808 he was an early settler of Morgan Co., GA. As recently as 1982 the un-occupied frame house where he and Lucy raised their thirteen children still stood visible just off the south side of I-20 less than 1/4 of a mile East of the Centennial Baptist Church near Rutledge, Morgan Co., GA. Slightly farther East is a CHENEY cemetery where Thomas and Lucy are buried as well as variousother CHENEY descendants."
"Thomas B. CHENEY died intestate but his estate settlement papers are on record in Morgan Co., GA. These identify many of his heirs. The inventory of the estate of Thomas B. CHENEY was taken the 7th of March 1846. It shows his land, his ten slaves and farm and household items and such things as books (not titled) and a map of Georgia. His substantial estate was not totaled. Lucy Perkins CHENEY, as a widow, lived with her youngest daughter, Thenia Ann, who married first John Shelton and married second James MURRAY. The will of Lucy P. CHENEY written the 11th DAY of April 1879 and probated the 5th DAY of September 1879 is on record in the Morgan Co., GA Courthouse. The only heirs she names are: grandson John Morton Shelton, granddaughter Adrain Hudson Shelton and daughter Thenia Ann MURRAY."
