SGM Vernon Lee Hyde, USA Retired, age 85, of Forest Park, Georgia passed away on 12 February 2017. Vernon had been under hospice care at that time. Vernon was born on 22 August 1931, in Madison, Nebraska to Fred Hyde and Gladys Mae Dutton. He grew up in Wakefield, Nebraska.

Vernon married Mary Lou (“Mickey”) Pearson on 12 April 1952 in Ashland, Oregon. Vernon and Mickey had four sons: David Gene Hyde, Jeffrey Lee Hyde, Daniel Kevin Hyde, and Andrew Scott Hyde. Jeffrey and Daniel have preceded Vernon. He had three grandchildren, and seven grandchildren.

Vernon served almost 29 years in the U.S. Army as a sergeant major of an EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) Units. Vernon entered the Army on 12 July 1949 and was honorable discharge on 30 November 1977. Vernon graduated from EOD School, Indian Head, Maryland in May 1956. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. His highest medals include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, and the Master EOD Badge. His military tours included assignments in Germany, California, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Colorado, and Georgia. During the Vietnam War he was the Sergeant Major of the 533d Ordnance Detachment (EODC), Long Bien, Republic of Vietnam.

Spectacular Effects International: After retirement from the Army, Vern started a special effects business in Atlanta where he did special effects for many hit movies. He particularly enjoyed working for Sam Rami on Evil Dead and Army of Darkness.
