Eugene Sylvester Barwick was born Dec. 30, 1920, to Peter and Francis (Putkaner) Barwick in Hatley, Wis. He was united in marriage to Beulah (Pelham) Barwick in Dec. 1945, in Springfield, Mo., before moving to Rolla in 1953.
Gene and Beulah moved to Licking, Mo., in 1954. He was baptized in 1973 at the First Baptist Church in Licking and was a member there until he moved back to Rolla in 2001 and transferred his membership to First Baptist Church in Rolla.
Gene was a Past Commander of the Disabled American Veterans, Past Commander of VFW Post 6337, and Past Commander of American Legion, all of Licking, Missouri. He also was Worshipful Master of Lodge #145 AF & AM Masonic Lodge in Licking; Chairman of the Texas County Red Cross; served two years as President of Bridge Builders a senior citizen center in Licking, Mo.; served as a substitute judged for the city of Licking, Mo., for several months; was Alderman for one year for city of Licking; and made several trips the Shriner's Burn Hospital as a member of the Shrine Abu Ben Adhem of Springfield, Mo., in Rolla.
Gene retired from the Civil Service at Ft. Leonard Wood in 1973 and remained active in Licking.
Gene joined the Army March 25, 1942, and was assigned to the 23 Engineer Battalion 3rd Armored Division in Camp Polk, La. His unit shipped to England in 1943, then to France in June 1944, where they joined General Patton's Army. When his unit began to enter the front line Gene was wounded on the outskirts of France and was sent to England to recuperate. After 6 months he rejoined his unit and began to fight in the Battle of the Bulge. Early in the battle he was injured again and began a long journey back to France to recuperate at the 191st Army Hospital in Paris, France, then to Cherbourg, France where he was placed on a converted hospital ship, finally arriving at Oreily General Hospital in Springfield, Mo.
Gene was awarded numerous medals for his service. These included the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and one from the French Government for his participation in the Normandy Invasion. He also fought in Rhineland at the Battle of the Bulge.
Survivors include his daughter Karen Davis and husband Jerry of Rolla; son Mitchell Barwick and wife Janice of Rolla; granddaughter Kim Day and husband Ted of Rolla; and great grandson Bret Day of Rolla; along with many extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Beulah Barwick (4-8-2007), grandson Michael Barwick (8-29-2002), four brothers, and three sisters, in addition to his parents.
Visitation for Eugene Barwick will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., with a Masonic Service at 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Rolla with Rev. Bob Johnston officiating. Interment will follow at the Boone Creek Cemetery in Licking, Mo. with Full Military Honors.
Memorials are suggested to Kids Keep Christ First of First Baptist Church, or the Barwick/Newton National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund. Cards are available at all James & Gahr locations.
