He was born to Gideon Henry and Minnie Belle Douthit Barthel. He married Janie Lou Pennington on May 7, 1943; they were married 61 years.
Mr. Barthel worked for the railroad in Houston and Palestine for 40 years. He then drove a mail truck for 10 years. He also farmed and raised cattle and pigs.
He was a member of Southside Baptist Church. He served in the US Army during WWII with Patton and in occupation forces in the Phillipines.
Mr. Barthel was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Janie Lou Barthel in 2004.
He is survived by his two daughters, Sandra Jean Dempsey (Mac) and Cheryl Anne Smart (Ernie); ten grandchildren, Tammy, Christina, Alex, Carissa, Courtney, Cynthia, Jonathan, Robert, Jeremiah and Rebekah; 21 great grandchildren.
