Served as a Pvt. in the 13th AL Co D during the Civil War. Captured on the first day of engagement at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in McPherson's Woods. Sent to Federal Prison at Ft. Delaware, on Pea Patch Island. Released in July 1865 along with his future brother-in-law Benjamin Apling Burdette. They managed to make their way home to Randolph County, Alabama from Delaware by walking and hitching wagon rides.
Married Miss Abigail Moore on 4 March 1866. They had seven children. After the war they moved to Texas and lived in Bosque and Erath County until his death in 1930.
