History - When the McDonald family left Ireland, Robert was only seven years old, but he always remembered the young man who came to see the family depart on their eventful journey.
When the McDonald family left Ireland, Robert was only seven years old but he always remembered the young man who came to see the family depart on their eventful journey. The young man remained too long and the boat sailed with him aboard. The youth was penniless and James McDonald paid his way and he came with them. Five years later when the California Gold Rush was on this young man left them. After the McDonald family had become established in Springville Utah his letters continued to come from California urging the boys to come join him and "get rich quick." Robert left against his mother's wishes when about 17 years old. The authorities brought him back to Springville but Robert left again about a year later and was unheard of by the family for nearly thirty years.
He was about 14 years old when the family left Council Bluffs, Iowa, for their journey across the plains to Utah. Five days later Robert helped bury his father who died of cholera near the banks of the Loup River where it enters the North Platte in Nebraska. He helped to get the family live stock across the plains; his name is listed with those of his older brothers as being one of the early pioneers of Springville, Utah, where he helped build the family log home in 1851.
Robert left for San Bernardino about this time (1853-1854). Later about 1890, Robert and his wife, Edna Ann Stewart, came home to Utah to visit relatives in Heber City and Springville. They went first to the home of the youngest McDonald brother at Buysville, three miles south of Heber City.
After the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 John McDonald's son, Andrew, went to California to see the damage and went to visit his uncle Robert and family in Livermore, California. Sometime after the turn of the century Joseph paid a visit to his brother Robert, and brought back news that one of Robert's sons was a gifted singer. Joseph brought two records of his singing to be played on the phonograph. The songs were "Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep" and "Old Dog Tray".
In 1907 Robert and Edna returned to Utah for a visit then contacts were lost.
