He was born July 28, 1925, in Standrod, Idaho, the eighth of 12 children born to Rosetta Amelia Kempton Barnes and Max Curtis Barnes. He married Patrica Hale Schultz on March 16, 1973.
James was honored with the distinct Purple Heart award for being wounded in action while serving in WWII. After the war, he returned home to be a rancher in partnership with his brothers under the name of Barnes Brothers. He was known as the banker.
He was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held the priesthood.
James is survived by his wife, Patrica Barnes of Heyburn; children, Wally Schultz of Eden, Cecil Schultz of Burley, Robin (James) Bronson of Burley, Jamie (Clint) Bronson of Burley, Holli (Wayne) Sherbeck of Rupert, Kitty Barnes (Joe Stanfield) of Pflugerville, Texas; 18 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Marion Ward; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents; one granddaughter, Toshua Eckley; and siblings, Charles Barnes, Ruth Lloyd, Max Barnes, Richard Barnes, Maggie Barnes, Eldon Barnes, Robert Barnes, Paul Barnes, John Barnes, and Ralph Barnes.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, with Clint Bronson officiating. Military Rites will be provided by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Organization. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in the Standrod Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at the Rasmussen Funeral Home and from 10 until 10:45 a.m. preceding the service.
