According to his death record, James was 47 years, 4 months, and 22 days old when he died. Using this to figure his birth date with the November 3 death date, James would have been born June 12, 1856. Because of the discrepancies in the death dates, I am just using June 1856 as his birth date on this memorial.
James was married to Nancy Robertson, and they had several children.

From Wednesday's Daily.
J.K. Franklin who lives on the South Side of the river in the vicinity of the Black Hawk street bridge, who was severely injured at the plant of the Ottumwa Brick and Construction company several days ago, died at the Ottumwa hospital yesterday. Mr. Franklin was driving a wagon loaded with brick out of one of the kilns and was caught between the load of brick and the top of the entrance into the kiln. He suffered a fracture of the spine and was taken to the Ottumwa hospital, where every effort possible was made to save his life, but without avail. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
