Isaac Moores Gowan was born on July 8, 1860 in Woodbury, Cannon County, Tennessee, the son of Dr Isaac Murphy Gowen (1824–1886) and Elizabeth T "Bettie" (Durham) Gowen (1830–1888).
He was married to Lula Burton.
A retired railroad flagman living at 760 Olympic Street, Nashville, he was 75 years old and a widower when he died at home of a ruptured blood vessel and arteriosclerosis on November 29, 1936. Burial was the next day in Spring Hill Cemetery.
