Soldier of the Confederacy. First enlisted, at Camp Henry McCulloch in Texas, on 1 October 1861 in Co. G, 6th Regiment, Texas Infantry, and was later discharged with disability; he later joined Co. C, 33rd Regiment, Duff's Rangers, Texas Cavalry, and served until the last appearance on the muster roll of March-April 1863.

There is a four year difference between the year of birth on the two gravestones. The later date of 1844 was sworn to be correct on an amended death certificate by granddaughter Frances Marie Gower Pendleton and is now the birth year of record of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

He first married Eliza A. Hulen, 10 Jan. 1865, in Paris, Lamar County, Texas. Following Eliza's death he married Sarah Jane Bishop, 8 Feb. 1883, in Williamson County, Texas.

Son of Capt. John J. Grumbles and Caroline Youngblood.
