"History of Cortland County" (H.P. Smith, Syracuse 1885) p. 356--"The Meachams, including five brothers, settled early in the eastern part of the town. Their names were Simon, Gideon, Issacher, Isaac, and Jonah; they located near Merrill Creek. Jonah kept a tavern for a time, where Homer Wightman's cheese factory is now located."

Gideon Meacham married Rachel Hall in 1793 in Somers, Tolland, Connecticut. They had at least 7 children: Belinda b.1798, Phoebe b. 1800, Hester, Betsey b. 1805, Huldah b. 1809, Manuel, and Hilas b. 1815.

Deeds from the sale of Meacham land include a "Meachum Burying Ground", a private cemetery located on lot 64 of Marathon town, Cortland County, New York. This cemetery has since been deserted and destroyed.
