Rev. Thomas Allen Whaley, age 84, of Sand Fork Road, Sand Fork, WV, departed this life Saturday, November 12, 2016, at his residence following an extended illness.

He was born April 6, 1932, in Clarksburg, WV, Harrison County, a son of the late Virgil O. and Carrie Whaley.

Upon graduating from Arlington Baptist College, Arlington, TX, and the Bible Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX, Rev. Whaley began a work in evangelism and ministry of the gospel of Christ, which spanned more than 50 years.
In addition, he was a member of the staff of the West Virginia Baptist Convention, director of the Southern Mission Project and The Man Christian Center. While working on the staff, he served as coordinator for flood recovery in the 1972 Buffalo Creek disaster in Logan County, WV, and the 1977 flood in Mingo and McDowell counties.

Part of his work with the Convention involved setting up and conducting Vacation Bible Schools, Sunday Schools and other educational programs within a six-county area. He pioneered Christian-service-type ministry by providing assistance in emergency and crisis situations. At the Man Christian Center, he supervised distribution of food, clothing and bedding to the needy, provided counseling, taught Bible and other classes, including giving karate lessons.

Rev. Whaley was a first-degree black belt in karate and had taught professional boxing. He used these skills in the ministry, particularly with young people. An avid reader, he had a large collection of his personal books, which many times he shared with young ministers starting and anyone who expressed an interest in reading his books.

Music was an important part of his life. He not only listened to and appreciated many kinds of music, he played guitar, utilizing many styles and practiced to perfect his techniques to entertain himself and others. He considered music an integral part of the worship service and encouraged its use by the church.

Rev. Whaley enjoyed witnessing for Christ in the church, in homes and in the workplace. He greatly loved being with people and interacting with them.
Throughout his 50-plus years of service, he was an outstanding pastor in many churches. Upon his arrival in Heaven, along with being with Jesus and his loved ones who had gone before him, many were there to thank him for leading them to Christ.

Rev. Whaley is survived by his wife, Linda Beal Whaley of Sand Fork, WV; and two daughters, Nancy (Brian) Jude of Cincinnati, OH, and Carole-Anne (Byron) Phillips of Middletown, MD; two sons, James Whaley of Cincinnati, OH and Scott (Donna) Whaley of Knoxville, TN; one stepson, Jim (Brenna) Adkins of Sand Fork, WV; one sister, Patty (Tom) Eberly of Freemont, OH; and one brother, Jack Whaley of Bradenton, FL; 22 grandchildren and one great-grandchild survive.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one stepson, Gerald (Jerry) Adkins; two sisters, Violet Houska and Sharon Keith; four brothers, Bill Whaley, Ivan Whaley, Denny Whaley and David Whaley.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, November 18, 2016, at the Ellyson Mortuary Inc., Glenville, with Pastor Bryan Groves officiating. Burial will follow in the Sand Fork Cemetery, Sand Fork, WV. Friends will be received at the Ellyson Mortuary Inc. from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, November 17, 2016.
