Alvin Lee "Bud" Matson, age 87, of St. Edward, Nebraska, passed away Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Bryan Medical Center West in Lincoln, Nebraska.

He was born the son of Fredrick Leland and Alice Elizabeth (Hopkins) Matson, on December 8, 1928 on a farm near Elgin, Nebraska.

Bud lived there several years before moving with his family to Springview, Nebraska, and later Stuart, Nebraska. He finished the eighth grade and began working at a young age as a mechanic at a filling station in Stuart.

Bud entered the United States Navy on July 25, 1947 and served on the USS Toledo until being honorably discharged on April 11, 1950.

On August 26, 1950, Bud married Darlene June Kallemeyn.

They lived in Chadron, Nebraska, and Igloo, South Dakota, before moving to Ontario, California, and later San Diego, California.

Bud worked as an airplane mechanic for Convair Aeronautics and as a marine mechanic for Jensen's Marine for many years, along with working for Honda of San Diego, and later starting Matson's Auto Repair.

In 1972, Bud returned to Nebraska where he was a shop foreman at Sullivan Motor Company in Albion for a couple of years before staring Matson Auto Repair in St. Edward.

On April 21, 1979, Bud married Cecile LaVonne Wolverton and the couple made their home in St. Edward.

Along with his repair business, Bud also sold cars and operated an auto salvage business until November 2016.

While living in California, He was president of the Singing Wheels Motorcycle Club.

For many years, Bud was a member of American Legion Crosier Post #226 of St. Edward and assisted with the honor guard.

He loved riding motorcycles, playing guitar, dancing the jitterbug in his earlier days, watching Gun Smoke and Bonanza, and was a great jokester and story teller.

Bud is survived by: his wife Cecile; five children, Cherie (Ed) Gbur, Curtis (Christine) Matson, Randa (Craig) Salazar, James (Debra) Matson, Wayne (Tina) Matson; seven step-children, Jerry (Jean) Bounds, Herbert (Elaine) Bounds, Linda (Tommy) Madden, Douglas (Linda) Bounds, Rick Bounds, Sheila Kiesling and Steve Bounds; 18 grandchildren; 23 step-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister: Evelyn (Larry) Harding; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; sons, Johnny and Michael Matson; step-son, Herman Bounds; brother, Jim Matson; and sister, Myrtle Evans.

Funeral services on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in St. Edward, Nebraska, Interment at Evergreen Cemetery in St. Edward, with Military Rites conducted by American Legion Crosier Post #226 of St. Edward.
