Also known as "W.E.," "Eugene" and "Gene," he also earned the nickname "Dude" as a young man because of his dapper attire. He was the husband of Maymie Lucille Fann Crockett and father of Lavada Jane Crockett Carlton and foster father of Curtis Ray Fann, his nephew. He was an excellent farmer, a gifted Tennessee Walking Horse breeder, a devoted member of the Methodist Church, and an honest, calm, and dearly loved man who enjoyed surprising his grandchildren and other children (and sometimes adults) by unexpectedly wriggling his ears and screeching like a cat.
