Eddie's birthplace was a feed mill overshot (water wheel), which was built on the line separating Tazewell and Mercer Counties, VA and WV. He attended elementary school at the "Gap" where Wilson D. Calfee, his future father-in-law, was one of his teachers. When he married, he listed his occupation as "jailer." In 1905, he and Mary Ellen purchased from Mary Ellen's brother Robert M. Calfee, executor, a 69-acre tract, part of Mary Ellen's father's farm near Ceres, bordering Davy Cabin Branch. Eddie was in business as Calfee and Bailey Well Drilling with his brother-in-law and cousin, Russell Kohler Calfee. Primarily, though, he was a farmer. He and his father purchased "the lower farm" near Speedway. They moved to Athens, WV and all four girls graduated from Concord State Normal and became school teachers. The family rented to students at fifteen dollars a month. After this period, they returned to live in Ceres. For the last twenty years of his life, he was married to Osceola (Osie) Rush Humphreys Bailey. Eddie was an elder in Calfee's Chapel at the Gap. Eddie died of "heart decompensation."
