LaMont L. Bennett, 95, our dear father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away February 5, 2017 in Richfield. He was born June 15, 1921 in Deseret, Utah to Joshua Laurence and Elizabeth Arlean Bennett.
LaMont grew up in Deseret and graduated from Hinckley High School where he was involved in basketball. He attended BAC (now SUU) in Cedar City, and then attended Utah State University. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was sent to Columbia University where he completed requirements and training to be commissioned as an officer in the Navy. He served three years in the Pacific Theater during World War II. By the end of the war, he was stationed in Okinawa as the Convoy and Routing Officer in the Port Director’s office.
On September 4, 1946, he married Louise Manning in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. After they were married he continued his education at the University of Southern California. Together they spent the next 30 years in education. He served as superintendent of schools for Sevier School District for 17 years. He was president of the Southern Utah Teachers Association and also as president of the Society of Superintendents for the State of Utah. Later, he owned and operated Sevier School and Office Supply in Richfield.
As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many positions, including as a member of the ward bishopric and first counselor in the Richfield East Stake presidency. In 1984 he was called to serve as the mission president of the Arkansas Little Rock Mission. He and his wife enjoyed the calling and served faithfully. Some of his most spiritual experiences came while serving in the mission.
For several years after their mission, the Bennetts spent time traveling with family and friends. His wife Louise passed away March 24, 2005.
Surviving him are his children: Stephen L. (Geri) Bennett, Canby, Oregon; Connie (Lee) Nielson, Richfield; Lee M (J’Lee) Bennett, Richfield; Mary Lou (Ron) Barnhill, Haymarket, Virginia. He has 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, LaRue Bennett Willden, Salt Lake City.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Eddys Barben, Lois Margart Bennett, and Ada Roesner.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 10, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Richfield 2nd Ward Chapel. Friends may call Thursday evening at the Magleby Mortuary form 6-8 p.m. and Friday at the ward chapel from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Burial will be in the Richfield City Cemetery with military rites by the V.F.W. Sevier Post #5050. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
