Charles is a son of Siney Lewis and Elizabeth Coleman - one of twelve children.

He married Crystal Dean Potter on October 30, 1912 in Vernal, Utah. They became parents to two daughters: Lenore and Patricia.

On June 5. 1917, Charles registered for the World War I draft. He was 25 years old. He and Crystal had one child. He was self-employed as a farmer and a canvasser. Charles is described as being of medium height and build with gray eyes and dark brown hair.

"Charles attended the University Of Utah on scholarship and graduated with bachelor's degree in 1915. Taught school for 37 years at Maeser, Glines, Ashley, Central, Whiterocks and Carbon elementary schools. Completed last 22 years at Uinta High School. He played in dance orchestra at Imperial Hall. He was also leader of a band of 30 local citizens, instrumental in organization of Uinta County Senior Citizens Group and in locating their present building. He was Scoutmaster of Troop 232, which won many honors."
