Serena A. Fleener, was born in Hardin County, Kentucky, Nov. 9, 1835. Moved with her parents to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1838. Ws married to Chas. D. Woodmansee in 1854. Crossed the plains by ox team in 1859.

To this union nine children were born, four of whom and their father proceeded her to the great beyond. The father died near Bieber, California in 1879. Two children died in infancy. C.F. Woodmansee died in San Francisco in 1894 at the age of 39 years. A.D. Woodmansee died at West Scio, Oregon in 1902 at the age of 31 years.

Those left to mourn the loss of their mother are: Mrs. Julia Hendricks of Cottonwood, Calif.; Wm. H. Woodmansee of Scio, Ore.; Mrs. Ella Munkers of Scio, Ore.; Edwin A. Woodmansee of Blodgett, Ore.; and Mrs. Mary Munkers of Albany, Ore.

Mrs. Fleener was married the second time to P.C. Fleener at Bieber, Calif., in 1888. Moved to Oregon in 1889 and settled near Scio where they resided for a number of years.

Some twelve years ago they moved near Albany, Oregon. They moved to Blodgett, Benton County, Oregon about eight years ago where Mr. Fleener died in 1911.

Some four or five months ago she went to Albany to her daughter’s Mrs. I.A. Munkers, where she could receive medical aid. Her three daughters were with her almost continously during the last three months of her life and the best of medical skill and care was given her but death finally claimed her in the sunset of life on May 29, 1914, at the ripe age of 78 years, 6 months and 21 days. Thus another one of our dear old pioneer mothers has passed away.

Mrs. Fleeners life has mixed with it some sad and rather remarkable history. Her maiden name was McClain. Her parents died soon after their arrival from Kentucky to Cincinnati, whe she was about three years old. The children were separated. The subject of this sketch was adopted as was also the other sister. Serena and her foster parents moved out West in 1841 and for the long period of 65 years the sisters never heard of each other, each thinking the other was dead.

While living at Tangent, Oregon a few years ago Mrs. Serena Fleener met with a man direct from Cincinnati and in conversation told him of her remembering having a sister eight years old when she left Cincinnati. He advised her to advertise for her sister. She sent a letter of inquiry to the Cincinnati Enquirer and by this means those long lost sisters were brought in touch with each other, and soon a visit was planned. Mrs. Fleener went to Cincinnati and found her older sister, Mrs. Sophrinia McClain White still living there.

A year later Mrs. White visited her sister at Tangent, Ore. Mrs. White died last July.
Mrs. Serena Fleener knew all the hardships of pioneer life having always worked hard. Her remains were laid away to rest in Franklin Butte Cemetery near her old home at Scio, Oregon, by a host of sorrowing friends and relatives. Rev. H. Albers of Albany conducted the funeral ceremony at her request.
