Dr. William Rawlings began practicing medicine in Sandersville, Georgia in 1875. He opened the Rawlings Sanitarium there in 1895. He and a staff of doctors and nurses ministered to patients from within and without the county. In 1903 Miss Varina Long assisted in establishing the Rawlings Nurses Training School which was in operation until 1932.

Miss Long married Isadore Hermann, also from Sandersville, and the two of them were longtime residents of Columbus, Georgia. Mrs. Hermann continued to be active in nursing.
