Hastings resident, John J. McCarty, 91, passed away on his birthday on February 1, 2017 at the Grand Island Veterans Home, Grand Island, Nebraska.

Rosary will be Friday, February 3, 2017; 7:00 P.M. at Butler Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, February 4, 2017; 10:00 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Father Michael Houlihan officiating. Burial with military rites by the Hastings Veterans Organization will be in Parkview Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Hastings YMCA, or Grand Island Veterans Home.

Mr. McCarty was born 2-01-26 in Merna, Nebraska to John Ambrose & Adelia (Rayles) McCarty. He graduated from Merna High School, enlisted in US Navy 1944-1946 stationed at Farragut, Idaho and Mare Island, California, as a pharmacists mate.  He married Freida Faye Neth in 1944, moving to Hastings in 1946; to this union, 6 children were born.  They later divorced.  In 1969, John married Val McCarty; she preceded him in 1998. John was a resident of Hastings, NE for 66 years.  He was a master electrician and co-owned, then sole owned and operated ABC Electric for a combined 50 plus years, serving many Nebraska communities, Texas, Colorado and more.

John was a member of St Michael’s Catholic Church,  member of the Hastings Board of Public Works 1991- 2006, Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, Elks, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Optimist Club and Golden Friendship.  He served in various capacities & received numerous community business awards.  He was fond of his many Dachshund’s especially Schnapp’s in the recent years. John participated in two Veteran hero flights to Washington DC. He especially enjoyed early and mid-day coffee with his friends and phone calls and visits with his family and hearing about his grandchildren. He spent the last several years with his fellow veterans at the Veterans Home, Grand Island, Nebraska where the care, friendship and support were greatly appreciated.

John is survived by his daughters; Marlene R Casey (Dr. James Lynn) of Overland Park, KS, & Kimberly F Gangwish of Grand Island, NE; sons John J. Jr. “Jack” (Renee’) McCarty of Lincoln, NE; Danny J. McCarty (Judy) of The Woodlands, TX and Kevin S. McCarty of Lincoln, NE. Sister, Evaline Davis of Grand Island, NE and brother, Arthur (Margaret) McCarty of Omaha, NE. 34 Grandchildren & great-grandchildren. Step Children; Raymond (Van) Perkins and Penny (Rob) Sanders of Hastings, NE; step-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Val McCarty; mother to his children, Freida Faye Brooke; infant son, Thomas Keith McCart; son, Dr. Michael L McCarty; parents; brothers and sisters, Joseph McCarty, Monica McCarty, Juanita (Loyd) Waffensmith, Frances (Dale) Lambert, Ella (Clyde) Flemming, Leroy Davis, Raymond (May) McCarty, an infant brother and step-daughter Diana Medley.
