TRANSCRIPT OF LETTER FROM MISS GERTRUDE LABARBE'S LETTER TO COUSIN KITTY:
66 Edgemont Rd.,
Asheville, NC
Aug. 6, 1953

My Dear Cousin:
I don't want you to think that I have forgotten my promise, but since returning from my trip I have been busy getting things straightened out and have not had time to copy the information about theMcQueens that you want but will try and attend to it soon.
The paper I have, writter by Mrs. McIver, whose husband, Gen. McIvor, a decendent of Col. Murdock McQueen, , says that Murdock McQueen married Margaret MacLean in Scotland and came to America in 1772 and settled in Chatham County, N.C. Their children were:
Flora, Anna, Catherine (your ancestor), Margaret, Archibald, Isabella, Hugh (whose picture we have) Eliza (my grandmother--married a Palmer).
Although Murdock MacQueen was called Col. MacQueen I don't know whether he received he received his title before coming to America or afterwards. It says (Mrs. McIvor's paper) nothing about his fighting in the Revolution.
The article I have gives the names of the people his children married and their decendants.
(Gertrude lists the names and children, etc....I changed the format a bit to make it easier to comprehend.)
1) CATHERINE MACQUEEN (daugher of Murdock MacQueen and Margaret MacLean) married ROBERT HALLIDAY
a) Mary Halliday
b) Robert Halliday
c) Margaret Halliday m. John William Sandford
1) Robert
2) John
3) Mary
4) Meta
5) Marion
6) Kate married Samuen Robinson Birdsey (that's all there is about the Birdseys).
7) Nannie
8) Ralph

CATHERINE MACQUEEN married a second time to JOHN A. CAMERON
There are eleven sheets of legal paper giving the names of all the descendants of Col. Murdock MacQueen and Margaret MacLean, and if you want me to have them copies (sic) for you I will do so. I don't know how much it will cost.
Since starting this letter I thought I would just copy the information about Catherine MacQueen and not keep you waiting any longer.
I haven't written Mr. Buford Birdsey yet about the lovely painting he has but will do so soon. Thank you for writing him. I do (not--this is x'd out) want very much a copy of the portrait and if he will have a photographer take a colored picture of it I, of course, will pay for it and be very grateful for his kindness.
I fell very much in love with your dear mother and hope we will see her again. Give her our love. Do write me and if there is anything else I can do for you, let me know.,
With love, I am sincerely,
Gertrude LaBarbe

Dear Kitty:
I have a few notes about family matters which may be of some interest:
William Sandford:
Came to America with his first wife in 1788 or 1789, apparently born in 1769. His wife died in the epidemic of yellow fever in 1798. He subsequently married the daughter of his and his wife's nurse, both named Ann McFall. His second wife was reportedly 18. As the marriage took place in 1799 this would make her birth in 1781. However, her toomb-stone (sic) indicates she was born in 1779. Mrs. Robert Glass (Great Aunt Meta) wrote in 1911 that she had visited St. Peter's Church year (yard) in Philadelphia and stood beside their tombs and that of a young child. (First wife).
Robert Halliday:
Married Kitty McQueen in 1811. She was supposedly 18 but it seems more likely that she was born in 1787 thus 24 at marriage. It is most likely that her father was Peter (Peter is scratched out and Murdock is penned in). Her mother was Margaret McLean. They settled in Moore County, N.C. and secured a large acreage. Catherine (Kitty) was supposed to have been born prior to the emigration to America.
You may possibly have all of this, but it puts to sleep some of the old stories about William having served in the British army at the time of the Revolution.
