PIONEER RESIDENT ANSWERS CALL TO THE GREAT BEYOND

In the death of John Pryor Yates, the Church of Christ, town and community suffered a loss that will be keenly felt while this generation lives. Brother Yates was by nature deeply religious and when but a young man, the then fronteer church was in its infancy, he was appointed an elder, the highest office in the Church of Christ, and to the close of his business life he retained that position. Under his guiding hand assisted by other Godly men, the church grew from a struggling little band of earnest prayerful christians to its present position of influence which is felt throughout the entire community, and the master hand of J. P. Yates is visible everywhere.
He came to this country 35 years ago settling in this vicinity and made his home here from that time until his death, with the exception of a short stay in New Mexico. Soon after coming here he became identified with the business interests of the community and was at his death the oldest business man in Comanche.
He served the public as postmaster, justice of the peace, city councilman and mayor. His dependable judgement, pleasing manner, and manly bearing was recognized by all who came in contact with him. As a leader he depended on the only true power known among men, love. He was not a driver, but a leader. When the storm clouds would gather, he could always see the silver lining and had the happy faculty of being able to make others see it also. Being human, his judgement was sometimes faulty, but no one doubted his sincerety of purpose and honesty of heart. Hence, he was a tower of strength and as such was a main stay throughout the many years he lived in our midst.
With the same ease and grace he met the problems of church life, he lived life with all its unfinished labors down at the feet of the Master and confidently awaits the announcement of our God "To Come up Higher,: leaving the burdens of life he so willingly bore.
John Pryor Yates was born in Russellville, Ark., August 20, 1866, died September 21, 1927, at the age of sixty one years, leaving a wife, one son and five daughters, Mrs. Mary Holmes, Mrs Paul Speer, Mrs. Herman Sowel and Abe Yates, all of Comanche, Mrs. O.C. Duncan, of Durant, Okla., and Mrs. Louis Ayres, of Vernon, Texas.
The funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Methodist church, Rev. M.O. Daley officiating, when more than one thousand people were present to pay their last tribute of respect. The services were very impressive and orderly under the direction of W. M. Lewis, assisted by Beeson Grantham of Duncan and John Steel, of Marlow funeral directors. During the services every business house in Comanche closed its doors. The floral offering was so great and numerous that a special funeral car from Duncan was secured to convery them to the cemetery.
Interment in Fairlawn Cemetey.
Weep we must, but we weep not as those who have no hope.
(obit was in possession of his nephew, LeRoy Elton)
