Funeral services were held 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, at Colonial Funeral Home for Ernest Ryals, 81, of Goss, who died on Monday, Jan. 30, at his residence as a result of his long battle with multiple myeloma cancer. Interment was held in Society Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Mark McArthur and the Rev. Dudley Williamson officiated at the services. Music was by Donovan McComb and pianist was Carolyn Sanson. Visitation was held at 4:30 p.m. for family and from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. for friends on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at Colonial Funeral Home.
After graduating from Bunker Hill High School, he served a six year hitch in the United States Army. While in the Armed Forces in Germany, he met and married Elisabeth Kuchel. After returning to the United States, he continued his education by attending and graduating from Pearl River Junior College. From there, he went to Mississippi College where he earned a master's degree in music. He then attended the University of Southern Mississippi and completed requirements for a teaching certificate.

He was a schoolteacher at Bunker Hill School and West Marion and also coached basketball. He retired from teaching in 1998. He was also a minister of music for various churches throughout his life. He was a member of Goss Baptist Church and devoted his life to the Lord.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elisabeth Kuchel Ryals; parents, John Clarence and Ada Ryals; brothers, Howard Ryals, Terrell Ryals and Raye Ryals, and sisters, Edna Calindrino and Eunice Douglas.
Survivors include his son, Johnny Ryals (Laura) of Columbia; granddaughter, Olivia Ryals of Columbia, and sisters, Mazie Forbes, Erma Moree and Christine Rasmussen.
Pallbearers were Kenny Carson, Gordon Fortenberry, Terrell Polk, Reggie Ryals, Ron Ryals and David Saucier. Honorary pallbearers were Bobby Barefoot and Mike Williamson.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Goss Baptist Church in his memory.
