Walter F. Maley was called back to the Lord on January 27th, 2017. He was surrounded by his loving wife and children as he went peacefully to his Eternal Rest.

Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines followed by burial at Resthaven Cemetery.

Walter was born in Des Moines to Walter and Irene Maley on October 19, 1928. The oldest son of six children, he graduated from Dowling High School in 1945.

Immediately upon graduation, at age 17, Walter joined the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Japan as part of the occupation force.

Upon returning home, Walter attended Rockhurst College and Drake Law School. He worked in private practice, was elected to the Iowa State Legislature, and finally served as General Counsel for Job Service of Iowa until retirement.

In 1959, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth "June" Theiler. Together they raised six children.

A steadfast Catholic, Walter was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus, a founding member of Sacred Heart Church in West Des Moines, a trustee and member of Sacred Heart's Building Committee for the church's present location, and a member of the Diocesan School Board.

In all aspects of his life, Walter's defining characteristics were humility, dignity, honesty and integrity. He and June were rarely apart in their 58 years. Together they raised six children, and welcomed 17 grandchildren into the world.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "June"; sons, Peter (Barb) Maley and Walter (Joan) Maley; daughters, Elizabeth (Bill) Brosnahan, Mary (Kenneth) Munro, Jeanne (Grason) Hill and Patricia (Ryan) Parker; and 17 grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at McLaren's Chapel followed by a rosary service at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Dowling Catholic High School.
