James, son of Zebedee (Jacob or Ya'qob or Yaakov in Hebrew), was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus and traditionally considered the first apostle to be martyred. He was a son of Zebedee and Salome, and brother of John the Apostle. He is also called James the Greater or James the Great to distinguish him from James the son of Alphaeus (James the Less) and from James the brother of Jesus (James the Just). James the son of Zebedee is the patron saint of Spaniards, and as such is often identified as Santiago. He is believed to have died circa A.D. 44.

Apostle James and his brother Apostle John were nicknamed Boanerges (sons of thunder), according to Mark 3:17 (The Gospel of Mark, Chapter 3, Verse 17).
