Urial's first wife was Clarissa, who died circa 1844 in Hancock County. Her name is mentioned in Urial's Civil War pension file. They had one known child, Emma, born about 1842 in Illinois.
Urial subsequently married Eliza Loanda Johnson on July 12, 1846. The names published on the State of Illinois marriage license database were incorrectly deciphered. The marriage register shows Urial Sherman and Loanda Johnson.
Urial, Eliza, Emma and Jay (the first known child of Urial and Eliza) were counted in Hancock County in 1850 near other residents known to have lived north and east of the village of Fountain Green.
In 1855 the household of "Uriah" Sherman was in Fountain Green Township.
Urial, Eliza and three children, Jay William, Eliza Janette and David Ransom, were counted in Fountain Green Township in 1860, again near residents known to have lived north and east of the village of Fountain Green.
Named as both Urial and Uriel in Civil War records, he enlisted as a private in Company A of the 118th Illinois Infantry and was mustered in November 7, 1862, at Camp Butler, Illinois. He was transferred to "Invalid Corps", September 1, 1863.
In 1870 Urial and Eliza were counted in Fountain Green Township with their four children, Jay William, Eliza Janette, David Ransom and Elmer Emmett, as well as Urial's parents, Honestus and Candace.
An 1874 plat map shows Urial as the owner of a farm located in the west half of the northwest quarter of section 14 of Fountain Green Township.
Family members believe Urial was buried in Hancock County.
Loanda Sherman filed for a widow's pension based on Urial's military service on August 29, 1885. It was granted.
