Johnny enlisted in the US Marine Corp in 1967...in which he also met and married the love of his life, his wife of 48 years, Estella Cole on November 7th, 1968. As a result of their union, they were blessed with their beautiful daughter Deanna. Johnny was honorably discharged by the Marine Corp on December 8th, 1971. He was awarded the Purple Heart for Bravery, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Navy/USGA Unit Commendation Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Gallantry Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and the Republic of Vietnam Civial Action Ribbon. He proudly served his country.
After taking a LONG break in his education, Johnny went back to school and earned his Bachelors of Professional Studies of Business at Barry University, graduating at the top of his class Magnum Cum Laude in 1998. Their daughter Deanna wed Matt Newburg, and they brought Johnny and Estella two wonderful grandchildren, Tayler Ray-Ann and Riley Elyse.
Johnny served as a police officer for the City of Fort Lauderdale for 21 years, and finally retired as a lieutenant in 2004.
Johnny became and avid boler, and achieved numerous 300 perfect score games. There was a time when he seriously considered becoming a professional bowler.
He is survived by his wife Estella, his daughter and son-in-law Deanna and Matt Newburg, grand-daughters Tayler and Riley, his aunt Burnice Green, his brother Sam Watkins and 8 nieces: Sonya, Toyia, Penola, Nicole, Keisha, LaKeisha, Miracle and 1 nephew: Corey. Also 2 half-sisters Zenola Watkins, Reed and Pamela Brewer. Also 15 additional nieces and nephews and 9 great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Louise Simms, brothers-in-law Ricky, Otha, and the late Larry Cole, and their wives and children. He will be truly missed.
