Born Herbert Crawford, he appears with his parents and siblings in the 1920 census (age 3) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and then in 1925 (age 8) and 1930 (age 13) in Middletown, New York.

In 1938 he married Dorothy Mould. He would appear with her in the 1940 census (age 24) in Wallkill, New York.

Around the time of his marriage, Herb had a falling out with his parents. In the end they disowned each other. At this point Herb adopted Leon and Ferne Heidt from Middletown as his parents taking their last name. Despite the falling out it appears that Herb did maintain contact with his brothers.
