Galena. Kan., April 10,— Thomas Kaiser, who boarded at No. 515 East Sixth street, and Edward Moreland No. 608 East Sixth street, were killed by an explosion at 3:40 o’clock this afternoon at the Rains & Childress mine, situated between Main and Joplin streets on West Fifth street.

Only three men were in the ground at the time of the explosion Moreland was killed instantly and Kaiser died within a half hour after the accident. James Etter, a negro shoveler, was hurled thirty feet by the force of the blast, but received no serious injuries. Kaiser was ground foreman at the mine. He and Moreland were engaged in preparing a shot near the face of the drift. The hole had been squibbed and they were placing powder into it when the accident occurred. The hole is supposed to have been hot, causing the explosion.
Sixteen Sticks of Powder.
After the men squibbed the hole they waited only a short time to allow it to cool, according to Etter. He said they placed sixteen sticks of powder in the hole. He was standing a few feet from the men. He heard one of them say "That is sixteen," and then the charge exploded.

was taken to the top. Workmen went, into the ground. Kaiser’s body showed signs of life and was recovered first. It was taken to the P. M. Clark undertaking establishment. Moreland’s mutilated body also was taken to the morgue. Medical aid was summoned and Kaiser later was removed to Dr. H. A. Browne’s office, where he died.

Moreland, who was 35 years old, is survived by a wife and parents. His parents were notified at Atoka, Okla., and will arrive in Galena today. Kaiser was 29 years old and unmarried. His parents reside in Quaker Valley. His body will be taken there. No funeral arrangements have been made.

Edward Moreland, 35 years old, was killed instantly, and Thomas Kaiser, 29 years old, received injuries from which he died half an hour later, in an explosion in a mine between Main and Joplin streets on West Eighth street at 4 o’clock Friday afternoon. The mine is operated by Childress and Rains.

The accident occurred while the men were preparing a shot. They squibbed a hole and left it to cool. Evidently it was still hot when they came back and began loading it with powder, and the heat caused the explosion. Sixteen sticks of powder went off.

James Etter, a negro shoveler, was standing near the men at the time of the accident. He was hurled thirty feet, but was not badly hurt.

Moreland lived at 608 East Sixth street. He leaves a wife, a brother and a father. Kaiser boarded at 515 East Sixth street. He was unmarried and leaves a father and mother and one brother. A double funeral will be held at 11 o'clock this morning from the home of Samuel Hayward, 608 East Sixth street, the Rev. S. S. Hagerman officiating.

Bodies of Explosion Victims to Be Buried Today.


Funeral services for Thomas Kaiser, 29 years old, and William Moreland, 35 years old, who were killed in an explosion in the Rains & Childress mine here at 3:40 o'clock Friday afternoon, will be held at 11 o'clock today in the Sixth Street Baptist church. The Rev. S. S. Haggeman will officiate at the double service. Kaiser's body will be buried in Messer cemetery and Moreland's body will be buried in Oak Hill cemetery.

Kaiser was widely known in Galena. He had been engaged in mining here for the last few years. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Kaiser, who reside three miles from Columbus, and two half-sisters are survivors.

Moreland, who has resided in Galena for some time, had many acquaintances here. He is survived by a wife, Mrs. Lora Moreland, and his parents, who reside in Atoka, Okla.
