John W. Turpel, 92, of New Bedford, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2017, at Care One of New Bedford after a period of declining health. He was the loving husband of 69 years, of Shirley J. (Braley) Turpel.

Born on Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, son of the late Rev. John E. W. Turpel and the late Gladys Ruth (Earnsby) Turpel, he settled in New Bedford after serving in the Canadian Army as a Medic.

John was a self employed building contractor. He was a longtime active member of the First Church of the Nazarene and was dedicated to his family and to God.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Stephen D. Turpel and his wife Gail of Acushnet; a daughter, Rhonda J. Hunsinger and her husband Gary of Melbourne, FL; five grandchildren, Mark J. and Nathan J. Turpel, Laura L. Cusolito, Allison Baxter and Jessica Madigan; seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Turpel was the father of the late Mark A. and Paul W. Turpel and brother of the late Douglas Turpel, Jenny Wise, Gladys Jackson, Florence Murray and Ethel Allen.

In accordance with his wishes he will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are by the Donaghy Funeral Home, 465 County Street, New Bedford MA.
