Charles was a member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church. He retired in 1986 from Chrysler Corporation in Indianapolis following 30 years of service. He was a member of U.A.W. Local #1226. When he was younger he enjoyed fishing, hunting and doing construction projects for his family. In recent years he greatly enjoyed NASCAR races and old movies.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sondra Kay (Davis) Holtzel, whom he married on January 17, 1953; a daughter, Charlotte Johnson-Jackson (husband: Jerry) of Knightstown; a son, Michael E. Holtzel of New Castle; six grandchildren, Andy Lee Hudson of Lewisville, Benjamin David Hudson of Knightstown, Casey Jo Taylor of Knightstown, Jeremy David Holtzel, Jami Nicole (husband: Kenny) Riddle and Jennifer Danelle Holtzel all of New Castle; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marjorie (husband: Kirby) Pierce of Wisconsin, Donna (husband: Gene) Hastings of New Castle and Phyllis (husband: Bob) Meyers of New Palestine; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Phillip Lee Holtzel; and four sisters, Charlotte Hammond, Betty Ditton, Mary Boyer and Janette Fadely.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Sproles Family Funeral Home with Pastor Charles Dugger officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery.
