Mercedes - Esther D. Moreno died unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Mission Regional Medical Center in Mission, Texas.

Born and raised in Laredo, Texas, Esther Moreno was the daughter of Lazaro Dovalina and Maria Gonzalez, both of whom were descendants of the original settlers who accompanied Escandon in the Spanish colonization of the mid-1700s. She was a direct descendant of Tomas Sanchez, the founder of Laredo and of Jose Vasquez Borrego who received the land grant of Dolores. In 1946, she married Alejandro Moreno, her high school sweetheart. After several years in Laredo, they relocated to the Rio Grande Valley and eventually moved to Mercedes.

She was a housewife who raised her children to strive for excellence and attain higher education. She enjoyed gardening and playing board games and dominos. She also attended Pan American University and became a substitute teacher in the Mercedes ISD. Esther also served as a volunteer at the Adult Literacy Program of the Mercedes Library and conducted a Spanish class for Winter Texans.

A devout Catholic all of her life, she served in the Altar Society and the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and frequently led Novena Rosaries.

She spent her last years at the Mission Nursing & Rehabilitation Center where she enjoyed bingo, dances, religious services and other activities. The family is most appreciative of all the outstanding care and attention she received from the staff at this facility during her time there.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings, her husband, a son and a granddaughter. She is survived by two siblings, Alfredo Dovalina and Alicia Salinas, six children, Alex, Jr. (Carmen), Yolanda Hominick (Joe), Gracie Alanis (Felipe), Belle Saenz (Isabel, Jr.), Rolando (Luule) and Gilbert (Toni), fifteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Friday, January 20, 2017, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary at 7 p.m. at Garcia-Trevino Funeral Home in Mercedes, Texas.
