Alice Mary McClow, 73, of Battle Creek, Mich., passed peacefully to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital, after a four-week severe illness.

She was born Feb. 27, 1943, in Leominster, Mass., the daughter of Norman Carlton Sparks and Helen Walker (Pratt) Sparks. Alice married Jerry Ray Berry in Leominster in August 1962. In 1966, they moved to England for 10 years, raising two children, Rhonda Elaine and Randall Jay, while there. The marriage ended in divorce in 1991.

Coming to Glen Burnie from England in 1976, Alice took nursing classes and worked in hospitals and doctors' offices in Anne Arundel County, and as a high school nurse at Parkdale High School in Prince Georges County. She also volunteered at two pro-life pregnancy counseling centers in Anne Arundel County.

In 1996, she married Donald Terry McClow in Glen Burnie, Md. Their favorite volunteer work was facilitating free divorce recovery video seminars at area churches in Anne Arundel County.

They moved to Battle Creek, Mich., in 1999. Alice worked as a special education bus assistant at Harper Creek Community Schools in Battle Creek for two years before spending more time on volunteering and her three favorite hobbies--reading, knitting and card making.

As an active member of Faith Baptist Church in Battle Creek, Alice demonstrated her gift of connecting immediately with newcomers and making them feel appreciated through her warm smile and positive reinforcement.

In 2011, she and a fellow church member perceived a growing need for a Christ-centered, full-service pregnancy counseling center in Battle Creek. After much research, they partnered with nearby Alternatives of Kalamazoo (Mich.), a well-established 30-year ministry that promotes the value of human life by serving the unborn and their families through the love of Jesus Christ. As a result, Alternatives of Battle Creek (ABC) became officially operational in early 2013, in Battle Creek, with access to clothing and supplies for children/babies, free counseling on available alternatives to abortion, medical tests, as well as childbirth and parenting classes. Today, ABC continues its outreach to the community.

Alice is survived by her loving husband, Donald Terry McClow, and her son, Randall Jay Berry--both of Battle Creek, Mich.; her daughter, Rhonda Elaine (Galata) Rent, of Glen Burnie; three grandchildren, Samuel Ian Rent, of Glen Burnie; Julie Rae Galata, of Middle River; and Phillip Michael Galata, and one great-grandson, Lucas Hunter Galata--both of Essex; her sister, Carleen Jean (Sparks) Foss, of Ohio; another sister, Cynthia Ellen (Sparks) Olivet, and her brother, Robert James Sparks--both of Leominster, Mass.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at Faith Baptist Church, 13840 Helmer Rd. S., Battle Creek, Mich., followed by a fellowship lunch. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in remembrance of Alice may be directed to Alternatives of Battle Creek, 1346 W. Columbia Ave., Suite 106, Battle Creek, MI 49015.

Cremation and other services provided by Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, 105 Capital Ave. N.E., Battle Creek, MI 49017. Personal messages for the family may be placed at www.farleyestesdowle.com.
