According to the aforementioned letters from his father, a woman of color took him into her cabin and nursed him as best she could for 4 days until Union troops found him and dragged him out into the snow outside her cabin with nothing but a blanket on him.
She allegedly begged them to let her keep the young man in her cabin but she was ignored. After he had laid out in the cold snow for about 4 hours, the woman finally got him back into her bed where he died presumably from the wound and exposure on January 4, 1863. He was only 18 years 2 months old.

Gravesite Details
Remains located in Bellefonte Cemetery, but his headstone was moved to Cedar Hill Cemetery due to the fear of vandalism.
