He graduated from Choate in Wallingford, Connecticut, and earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard College (1961) and an M.B.A. from Stanford University (1966). Jim was a graduate of officer candidate school in Newport, Rhode Island and was later based at the Naval Air Station, Port Lyautey, Kenitra, Morocco.
Jim served as an Executive Vice President and the Chief Financial Officer of Imperial Holly Corp. from 1988 to 1993 and as President and Chief Executive Officer from 1993 to 2001. Before focusing on the family sugar business, he served for more than 10 years in several executive positions at Pogo Producing Company, including Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer. His career also includes nine years of investment banking experience at Lehman Brothers in the oil services industry. Jim served as a Director of Magellan Midstream Partners, LP from 2006 to 2015. He served as a Director of Bouygues Offshore S.A. from 1997 to 2002. Jim was on the board of FotoFest & YES Prep.
Jim will always be remembered as a gentleman, with astute business sense as well as a wonderful sense of humor. Jim had varied interests as a pilot, hunter, fly fisherman, photographer, architect, artist and chef. Jim loved his family with whom he traveled the world and shared his enthusiasm for adventure. A Francophile, Jim learned French later in life and enjoyed spending time with friends and family traveling and taking cooking classes throughout the South of France.
