Richard served as a Staff Sergeant & Ball Turret Gunner on B-24G #42-78256, 746th Bomber Squadron, 456th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Los Angeles County, California prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 18, 1942 in Los Angeles, California. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the fabrication of metal products and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24G #42-78256 took off from Stornara, Italy on a bombing mission over Blechhammer, Germany. After a successful bomb run they were hit by German ground anti-aircraft fire on the left wing causing them to crash in Germany during the war. One airmen from another plane said he saw 9 parachutes leave the aircraft.

Richard was "Killed In Action" in Germany during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He is interred somewhere in California.
