Raymond E. "Ray" Anderson, 77, of Walnut Creek, Calif., formerly of Galesburg, died Thursday, July 11, 1996, in Walnut Creek.

Born Dec. 4, 1918, in Galesburg to Joe E. and Agnes Lundberg Anderson, he married Barbara Johnson on Sept. 14, 1941, in Galesburg. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Joe of Danville, Calif., Larry of Denver and Peter of Lanai City, Hawaii; one sister, Marion Peterson of Galesburg; and four grandchildren.

A graduate of North Park College in Chicago, he started Ray Anderson Cleaners in Galesburg in 1945, later known as Anderson Cleaners. He sold his share in the business in 1979. He served on the Knox County Board of Supervisors in the 1950s and 1960s.

He also served in the Illinois House of Representatives for three terms, where he was majority whip and assistant House Republican majority leader. He served on the Legislative Audit Committee and Legislative Space Needs Commission. He last served as assistant director of the Illinois Department of Aeronautics in Springfield.

A World War II Army Air Forces veteran, he served in the European Theater with the 86th Fighter Bomber Group and the 525th Squadron. He was a member of Galesburg American Legion and Galesburg Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a member of Covenant Church in Galesburg, where he served as trustee, deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a Cub Scout pack leader.

He served as president of the Galesburg Rotary Club. He was a board member of Soangetaha Country Club.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at United Methodist Church in Alamo, Calif. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Galesburg.
