George L. Houghton, 96 passed away Thursday, Jan 5, 2017 at the VA Medical Center in Martinez after a brief illness.

Loving Father to Polly Ann Dungan, Mark and Craig Houghton. At the age of 96 George left this Earth for Heaven.

He will be with his parents, Grover Cleveland Houghton and Alice Louelle Burch; his first wife, Armaline Cox; his second wife Theda Crapo and their infant daughter, Susan Georgeanne and stepson Tom McNerney and his last wife, Nadine McCallum.

George is survived by his sons, Mark and Craig; his daughter, Polly Ann Dugan; two grandchildren; and close friends from Oregon.

Dad was born in 1920 in Napa, CA, under a grapevine while his mother was working picking grapes. He worked hard every day of his life. His family moved around a lot in order to find jobs. They worked any job: chopping and delivering firewood, hauling supplies or picking crops. He was the youngest of three boys, the oldest was Grover and Frank was in the middle. He graduated 8th grade, but moving and working constantly, he did not graduate high school. At age 22 he and his brothers enlisted to fight in WWII. George was on a ship in the Pacific that started in the Philippines and later to Saipan and Guam.
They delivered fresh water to the troops while occasionally fending off war planes.

After the war, Dad was out dancing at one of his favorite night spots in downtown Sacramento; he met and fell in love with our mother Theda. He worked for Lucky Markets as a meat cutter, for 30 years. It was very common for him to work 6 days a week. We went on many camping trips, which he still did until his last trip in 2015.

After Mom and Dad divorced, he met Nadine. They married and retired from Lucky's soon after. He moved to a small town, Talnet in southern Oregon. He had a large garden, orchard, and chicken coops. He was very active, always busy. He loved the atmosphere and the climate. It suited him well. When Nadine passed away in 2006, he moved back to California to be closer to his family. He has a grandson, Nick and a granddaughter by marriage Lori. Just recently, he became a Great Grandfather when Lori and Tony had a daughter, Addison. Dad was a true outdoorsman. He loved and respected nature. He had many cats and dogs. His last cat Willey, was his best pal.

Looking back, Dad had a tough early life, as many did during the depression. It instilled a work ethic that is hard to find these days. He never seemed to tire, even if he worked from sun up to sun down. This is one of the reasons he lived long and well. He has truly lived up to the label the "Greatest Generation".
