Mary Edith Doss Masterson

DECATUR — Edith Doss Masterson of Decatur passed away on Jan. 9, 2017 after a brief illness. She was born on May 15, 1916 in the Moss Chapel community of Hartselle. At age six, she moved with her family to Decatur where she joined Central Methodist Church and graduated valedictorian of her class at Decatur High School. On Sept. 13, 1941, she married her high school sweetheart, R.B. Masterson, who wrote in their yearbook, “Ambition Rings My Brain, Mary Edith My Heart.”

Following their marriage in the home of her parents, they moved to Georgetown, South Carolina, where in 1944, R.B. left for war in the South Pacific and Mary Edith was a mother to a newborn son, Bud. She became a member of Duncan Memorial Methodist Church and afterwards a charter member of Wayne Methodist Church. Following the death of her husband of 57 years, Mary Edith returned to her hometown joining the Austinville Methodist Church and celebrated her 100th birthday at her sons farm. Her passions included her faith, family, reading and gardening.

Surviving are her son, R.B. “Bud” Masterson Jr.; granddaughter, Renee Masterson Godinez; great-grandsons, Matt and Alex Godinez and grandson-in-law, Travis Godinez.

The family expresses grateful appreciation to the doctors and nurses of Complete Family Care in Moulton and to those in the CIC Unit, 5th floor, Decatur Morgan Hospital, the staff at Cedar Springs Assisted Living and especially the parishioners of Austinville Methodist Church.

Services will be Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Austinville Methodist Church with the Rev. Dallas Culver officiating and Ridout’s Brown-Service Funeral Home directing. Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery. Visitaiton will be one hour prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Chitwood, Travis Godinez, Freddie Himes, Bud Masterson, Bill McKenzie and Bobby Merritt. Family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of the Valley.
