Jan Teunise Nyssen or DeNyse was baptized on Apr 12, 1653/54 with his twin brother Denys at the Dutch Reformed Church in New Amsterdam, New York.
He married Catalyntje Teunisen Bogart on Nov 16, 1679 in the Flatbush Dutch Church, Flatbush, New York. She was baptized on Dec 16, 1657, the daughter of Teunis Gysbertsen Bogaert and Sarah Jorise Rapalje.
Jan resided at Wallabout, taking the oath of allegiance in Brooklyn in 1687. He moved to Raritan, New Jersey about 1690. His name appeared at the organization of the First Church of Raritan on Mar 9, 1699, where he was installed as First Elder.
His descendants and the descendants of his brothers adopted various surnames, including Tunisen, Denyse, and Van Middlesward (from Middlebout, Midwout, or Wallabout).
Jan Teunis Nyssen Van Middleswaert baptized 1654 was first seen with the name Van Middleswaert in 1699. In 1686, Jan bought land in Middlesex County NJ with his brother Cornelius Tunison and they are both last name Tunison and their brother in law Jeronimus Rapalje. In 1699, when Cornelius sold his part of the land to his brother Jan, Cornelius was listed as Tunison and Jan was listed as Van Middleswaert. This is the first time Jan is seen as Van Middleswaert in 1699. This is in the book Colonial Families of NJ which also contains the deed.

The person who bought land at the Brooklyn Ferry in 1723 was probably from the Denys Denyse baptized 1654 family, which is Jan Van Middleswaert 1654's twin brother. Denys Denyse married Helena Cortelyou, and her father Jacques left land to her. Helena left the land to her son Jacques Denyse. Then he left the land to his son Denys Denyse. Jacques' son Denys Denyse was the one that ran the Ferry from Brooklyn to Staten Island.
In 1704, he was elected to the House of Representatives of New Jersey, serving in the Second Assembly in 1704 and the Third Assembly in 1710.
On May 22, 1723, Jan Teunis Van Middleswaerd bought a house and lot at Brooklyn Ferry. He wrote his will in 1742.
