On June 14th, the beloved Matriarch and center of our family, Lee Birdsey, ended her 17-year struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. Surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and wonderful husband, she left the arms of her loving family to be embraced by her awaiting Savior. We all look forward to seeing her again face to face when each of us makes that journey.
A uniquely strong and intelligent woman has left us with a deep sadness, but also with tremendous pride and thankfulness for having had her love, strength, and fighting spirit to show us the way. Lee was a remarkable person for the life she lived.
Adopted herself, she adopted three to her already expansive family of 9 children. In addition to her 12 children, there were many that she adopted unofficially. Her children's friends were always welcome, and at times there were as many at 17 at the dinner table. Although she was born in the 1930's and came of age in the 1950's, she seemed timeless in the way she adapted to the changing culture. A voracious reader, she was highly articulate, and always ready to engage those around her in a thoughtful and challenging discussion.
We will miss her wonderful meals, her witty sense of humor, her beautiful garden her friendship, and her presence with our family. How privileged we were to have you.
Lee leaves behind her husband Jerry of 36 years; six sons James (Jean) Gray of Bellingham, Jeffery (Lori) Gray of Bellingham, Jerry Birdsey of Lynden, Delmar (Cindy) Birdsey of Lynden, Tyler (Kitt) Bennett of Florida, Rickie (Michelle) Birdsey of Seattle; six daughters, Leslie (Warren) Henley of Bellingham, Tracy (Lowell) Langford of Lynden, Kasey (Earl) Bower of Lynden, Robin (Dennis) Rhodes of Maple Falls, Bernice (Steve) Brim of Bellingham, Camron Elizabeth of Seattle; 20 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Whatcom Hospice or Alzheimer's Association. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 20, 2005 at 1 pm at Jerns Funeral Chapel with Mr. Rod Mackenzie officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Ferndale.
