Robert Taylor Fly was born on December 16, 1886 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, the son of John Franklin Fly (1857–1943) and Sarah Jane "Jennie" (Buttrey) Fly (1860–1904).

He was married on August 21, 1906 in Davidson County to Ada Virginia "Virgie" Green (1886-1965), the daughter of Charlie Green and Nattie ( -- ) Green. On Robert's Death Certificate, Virginia was the informant and she listed her maiden name as Greene, rather than Green.

A contractor-plasterer who was living in Nashville, Robert was 69 years old, married and had arteriosclerosis when he died on September 14, 1956 of bilateral pneumonia at Saint Thomas Hospital and was ill since about 1951.

Survivors included his wife Virgie Green Fly, daughter Mrs John F Sullivan in Nashville, sons Robert M Fly and Howard D Fly of Nashville, sister Mrs Mabel Land at Nashville, brothers Roy Fly in Nashville and Ed Fly of Abilene, Texas and four grandchildren.

Much of the above is from his Death Certificate, with Virginia G Fly of Nashville as the informant. Additional information is from his obituary in NASHVILLE BANNER on September 15, 1956.
